By the first week of October, the public rollout of Microsoft’s eagerly expected Windows 11 OS will begin. Developers and participants in the Windows Insider Program have been thoroughly testing the new OS while it is still in development. The best news so far is that there will be a speed upgrade. We already know that Windows 11 will include a tonne of new features and design improvements. No matter how their PC or laptop is set up, Windows 10 customers who upgrade to Windows 11 will get a speed increase.
Microsoft has stated that upgrading to Windows 11 will significantly speed up older systems running Windows 10. Steve Dispensa, Microsoft’s vice president of enterprise management, shared an overview of some of the performance advantages of Windows 11 in a video that was released this week. One of the most important differences between Windows 11 and Windows 10 is how “snappy and responsive” it will seem.
There are the number of improvements in the new OS, including one that alters how the software handles CPU and memory resources, Windows 11 will seem faster. Dispensa noted that in Windows 11, applications running in the foreground will receive higher priority and greater memory and CPU resources, resulting in quicker performance.
The way we prioritize apps and processes in Windows 11 represents a significant change in how we deliver the Windows experience with improved performance, according to Dispensa. He also added that they have done a lot of work in memory management to favor the app Windows running in the foreground so that they’re prioritized with more CPU and other system resources.
Additionally, he mentioned that this function would activate when the CPU was under a lot of stress and provided a screenshot of a Windows 11 machine with the CPU operating at roughly 90% of its potential. It would slow down the opening of other apps in an instance like this on earlier versions of Windows. But in the situation Dispensa gave, programs like Word and Excel opened up incredibly quickly despite the heavy CPU load.
Dispensa explained that even though the CPU was under a lot of stress, “despite the heavy load, both apps launched as they normally would without any lag, and that’s because these processes are in the foreground, so they get more compute resources. That’s seconds of time saved in this case, and the time savings add up as you use the apps throughout the day.
In addition to this increase in speed while opening programs, Windows 11 users will undergo a “nearly instant” experience when the device awakens from sleep, similar to how your smartphone may be used right away when you “wake” it. According to Dispensa, while Windows 11 is in sleep mode, the RAM will remain active while the other components shut down. This is essential to Windows 11 waking up your device fairly immediately, along with a few other procedures.
Other improvements to performance in Windows 11 include updates that are 40% smaller and hence run faster, sleeping tabs in web browsers that use up to 32% less memory, and a 37% reduction in CPU utilization.
